盖

The Lid

A pale barrel stands with its lid on, as if to ask whether what is poured in can ever be taken back.

盖The Lid

The sea floor pressed very old lightdown, layer on layer, until it blackened. We scooped it up and burned it.What has been burneddoes not return.Later came another kind of light, figured day and night in closed rooms. The figuring grew costly, and what it madewas sometimes worth nothing by morning. There is a lighter kind still. It leaks from morning to night.A person follows itand, following, grows thin.Oil, numbers, and the gazehave all been poured into barrels like this, each sure there was plenty. Some go where it flows. Some reach out and close the lid.The barrel is still the barrel. When it is empty, the sky shines along the rim.
