Relay

顺德，积木板上一辆磕掉了漆的小红车；少年只管冲向终点，走远了才懂，每个终点，都是替别人备好的起点。

Shunde. A little red race car with chipped paint, on a white building-block board; the young run only for the finish, and learn much later that every finish line is a starting line kept for someone else.

接力Relay

他只肯当那辆红车，吐着舌头，要跑第一。生锈的拖车，他嫌慢，嫌笨。车头的漆磕掉了好几块，都是赢回来的。我小时候也这样，以为第一名永远不会老。陪他再看一遍，红车也老了。新车一辆一辆从它身边过去。我开始看别处：那辆拖车，修车的人，站在场边的。他还是盼红车赢。我也盼。就让他先跑吧，跑得飞快。总有一天，他会把手放在别人的车尾，轻轻一推。

He will only be the red car,tongue out,racing to be first.The rusty tow truckis too slow, he says, too clumsy.The paint on its nosehas chipped away in places,every chip a race he won.I was like that once.I thought whoever came firstwould never grow old.Watching again beside him,I see the red car grow old too,new cars going past itone by one.My eyes begin to wander:to the tow truck,to the ones who mend the cars,to the ones standing by the track.He still wants the red car to win.So do I.So let him run first,as fast as he can.One dayhe will rest his handon the back of someone else's carand give it a gentle push.
